How Old Is Kush, Really? A Timeline in Perspective
Cleopatra died in 30 BCE. Jesus was likely born within the following couple of decades, probably around 6 to 4 BCE. That puts her death and his birth roughly 25 years apart. Julius Caesar died in 44 BCE, and Aristotle died in 322 BCE, a gap of 278 years between them. Cleopatra herself lived closer in time to Jesus than Julius Caesar lived to Aristotle, even though all four names get filed under the same vague heading of ancient history in most people’s heads.
Kush’s own timeline holds the same kind of surprise, once the real dates get checked against each other.
A Conquest That Started With Rome Itself
Piye conquered Egypt around 727 BCE, becoming the first king of the 25th Dynasty. Rome’s own legendary founding date, by the count later Roman writers eventually settled on, was 753 BCE, just 26 years earlier. Kush was already ruling Egypt while Rome, by its own telling, was barely out of its founding myth, centuries away from becoming a republic, let alone an empire.
Kush Outlasted the Egypt That Fell to Rome
Rome took control of Egypt in 30 BCE, the same year Cleopatra died. Kush, its neighbor to the south, fought Rome to a standstill under Amanirenas and secured a peace treaty around 21 or 20 BCE, the kind of settlement Rome rarely granted anyone. Kush then kept going as an independent kingdom for more than three and a half centuries after that treaty, long after the Egypt Rome had just conquered had stopped existing as its own separate story.
Still Standing Through Rome’s Christian Turn
In February 313 CE, the emperor Constantine and his co-emperor Licinius issued the Edict of Milan, granting Christians legal protection across the Roman Empire for the first time. Christianity did not become Rome’s official state religion until 380 CE, but 313 CE marks the turning point most people picture when they think of Rome going Christian. Kush’s own kingdom, centered at Meroë by then, was still standing when that happened, and lasted roughly another 37 years before its own end around 350 CE. Kush’s kingdom had already been gone for more than a century by the time Rome’s western half finally collapsed in 476 CE.
So How Long Did Kush Actually Last?
Putting a single start date on Kush is harder than it sounds. Historians generally place Kush’s rise as an independent kingdom around 1000 BCE, after Egypt’s own New Kingdom broke apart and pulled its administration out of Nubia. But the first Kushite king known by name, Alara, is attested only starting around 800 to 760 BCE, and no inscriptions survive from his own reign. What’s known about him comes from later kings crediting him as their founder, not from his own contemporary record.
Take that earlier estimate, and Kush’s kingdom ran from around 1000 BCE to about 350 CE, a span of roughly 1,350 years. Rome’s own full run, from its legendary founding in 753 BCE to the fall of the Western Roman Empire in 476 CE, comes to about 1,229 years. By that measure, Kush’s kingdom may have lasted longer than the entire history of ancient Rome, founding to fall. The honest answer is that it depends on which starting point for Kush gets used, and Alara’s own attested reign alone would put Kush a bit behind Rome instead.
This doesn’t make Kush older than Egypt, whose own First Dynasty began well over a thousand years before Kush’s rise. What it shows is how much real time actually separates names people tend to lump together into one blurry ancient past. Curious about the kingdom that outlasted Cleopatra’s Egypt?
